(1) How will Masoli contribute?- This is not a discussion I dreamed I would be having a few months ago. With his experience and talent, I would say a great deal. Let's hope he sticks to the straight and narrow.

(2) Top 10 recruiting class- Who said Nutt can't recruit. Let's see how we finish in Feb.

(3) How will we finish? This might depend on how we start. If we are to finish with a decent record we have to have a good September.

(4) What will our new mascot be? Lions, tigers and bears... oh my.. well we know it won't be a tiger. Those are a dime a dozen. Not sure a hotty and a toddy will work either..

Two blowouts, swine flu, season begins

The Rebels started out sluggish again tonight but rolled to a comfortable 53-7 win. After an odd start to 2009, the Rebels real season begins on Thursday against South Carolina. This will be a true test of where we are.
South Carolina used several turnovers in 2008 to barely defeat the Rebels. The SI jinx. Many would argue this should be a revenge game for Ole Miss. I think Nutt should sell it that way.

I am a bit uneasy about the game Thursday night. First I have no feel for this team. After the first two games, both huge blowouts, I can't say if I think we look better than the end of last year. The Rebels seemed lackluster in both wins. Was it the flu? The week off in the early season? Who knows. Second, it's an SEC game. Anything can happen when two SEC teams meet. Third, South Carolina will be pumped to play a top 5 team. Finally, South Carolina always packs their stadium and it can get loud.

The long open week is finally over. The prize for the wait? Ole Miss #5(AP), #6 (USA). I wasn't happy with the schedule this year but I have to say that we lucked out. With the pig flu hitting the team it is a blessing that the Rebels had this week off and are playing a 1AA team on Sat.

Rebels move up in both major polls

Ole Miss moved to number 6 in the AP poll and number 8 in the coaches poll after the 45-14 victory over Memphis. The Rebels continue to be in uncharted territory for my lifetime. This is the highest the Rebels have been ranked in my 36 years.

Memphis game observations

The game started out well for the Rebels. The team seemed fired up and we scored 10 points early. Then it seemed the spirit of the team evaporated until the 4th quarter. Normally, Ole Miss fans would be happy with a 31 point win. However, this time there are some folks who felt we should have done better. Here are my thoughts on the game:

(1) This is the game for Memphis. One could argue that this is more important to Memphis than any bowl game they play in. A win over Ole Miss in any season is huge but with the Rebels being in the top 10 a win for Memphis would have been the biggest win in school history. Bottom line, they were up for the game. For us, it's a game we should win. So it's hard for the team to be hyped for the game.

(2) First game of the season. It seems most teams play sloppy the first game of the season.

(3) We finished. The most important thing for me this weekend is how we finished. We pored it on in the 4th. This will be important for the rest of the season.

(4) Our D only game up one drive the entire game.

(5) Jevan was very mobile in the pocket and eluded several possible sacks.

There will not be a Rebel game tomorrow but there will be a multitude of SEC games that span the length of the day.

I'll start by watching some UK v. Miami of Ohio, which is being played here in Cincinnati but it isn't exciting enough for me to drag myself to the game. (especially with all the other games going on). I'll flip over occasionally to the UT game. Won't be much of a game but I want to see how they look. Then it's on to the Georgia game. I'll flip to the MSU game during commercials. Finally to cap it off I'll catch the Alabama, VTU game. Oh and I guess I'll catch some of the LSU game.

It's finally here. It's time to strike up the band, wind up the cheerleaders, set the DVR's and put on the pads. 2009 is here.

It's all new and fresh. Everyone is #1 and undefeated. Everyone has a shot at their conference championship. Soon their will be grunts, screams and tears. Week by week teams will fall by the wayside. Some will get back up and make it a season to remember. Others might never fall and finish on top of the world.

It remains to be seen how the Rebels will fare this year. Soon we will find out.

Wow, time flies. In less than two weeks the most highly anticipated Ole Miss season of my life begins. This is new territory for us Reb fans born after 1970. It's nice getting all this attention. It seems each day College Football Live has something to say about us. There is plenty of news articles written on the up and coming Rebs.

Regardless of what happens this season, I'm digging this.

ESPN's new regional lineup good for Ole Miss exposure

If being in the preseason top 10 isn't enough to bring awareness of the Rebels then the new regional ESPN affiliates should push it over the top. The new ESPN regional games, replacing the Raycom(JP) games will be shown in markets such as New York, Phoenix and St. Louis.
In the past the Rebels have had the majority of their games on the regional SEC broadcast. This year the Rebels are likely to have fewer games on regional TV and more on on national TV. (due to the high ranking). However, anytime the rebels play in places such as TX and NY it can only help in recruiting.

Will the next 12 months be the year of the Rebel? Baseball is one game away from the CWS and all the preseason magazines have the football team ranked in the top 10 with a possible BCS bowl game. Basketball looks strong. So will this finally be the year that Ole Miss dominates the SEC in all major sports? Time will tell but for now, let's book our ticket to the CWS.

As Ole Miss fans, we don't get too many summers like this one. Usually we are waiting to see if Lidney's put's us 5th or 6th in the SEC West. Rarely, we move up to 3rd.

Wow, have times changed or what? Top 10 in many preseason-preseason polls. Talk of SEC West champs and a re-match with Florida. It will finally be a pleasure (I think) to pick up the prediction magazines. I've even subscribed to ESPN the magazine in anticipation of all the positive articles that will be written.

Has Ole Miss finally decided to release a new mascot? This may be a stretch but I received an email from the official Rebel shop. The email was marketing the new Rebel Schedule Tee. On the Tee it has a Rebel Mascot and the mascots of the 12 universities that we play this year. This, if I am not mistaken, is the first time that Ole Miss has used a mascot since Col Reb.

A note from the past

Recently I started scanning in old pictures and mementos to upload in a safe and secure place on the internet. You know, in case anything happens to the real ones.

I came across a letter from 1984 from an Ole Miss administrative person. I was 11 in 1984. As an assignment for a class I had to write a letter. I don't remember why. I decided to write to Ole Miss. I don't have the letter I wrote but I remember saying something to the effect that "I was so upset when we lost the game that I wanted to cry but instead I hit my sister." This letter was the response from Ole Miss.

I should look this guy up to see what he is doing now.

SEC West, the Big XII of 2009?

I was looking through my new SI when I found SI's top 10 for 2009. I was excited that Ole Miss is #6 and ranked the highest in my lifetime. But then I realized that the SEC owns almost 50% of the SI's Top 10. There are four SEC teams in the top 10. (Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU) What's even more amazing is that the SEC West has three of the four SEC teams in the Top 10. Is there another division or even conference that can match up with the SEC West?

We all know the hype around the Big XII South this year. The hype stopped when the Big XII South went 1-3 in post season. Everyone assumed the Big XII South was the best division in college football. Of course they were wrong. Let's up this time the pundits have it right!

(1) Basketball- Yes we lost three outstanding players to injury but we did beat Arkansas.

(2) Baseball- Baseball is just around the corner. This should be an exciting year with an upgraded stadium.

(3) Recruiting- How high will Ole Miss move up in rankings to finish off the season.

(4) Super Bowl- No Manning but watch just for fun.

(5) 2009 schedule- A 12th game with a possible big BCS opponent in the works. Should be interesting who we play

It's been a long time coming. We, Rebel fans, deserve to feel good. It's nice to walk into work this week wearing Ole Miss attire and be respected by all of these Ohio State fans. I am sure Rebels all over the country are feeling the same pride as I am.

I think these feelings will only get better over the next few years. I believe we will be a preseason Top 10 team next year. I also believe that we have an outstanding shot at winning the SEC west and making our first trip to the SEC championship game in Atlanta. Wow, wouldn't that take a big monkey off our backs!

Lots of happy Rebels leaving Dallas this morning

I'm sitting in DFW and I have seen numerous Rebel fans heading home with a big ole grin on their faces. This is a great feeling and a long time coming.

This is the first time I've personally experienced a big Rebel win at a bowl game. I didn't have the chance to attend the Cotton Bowl in 2003. The last bowl game I attended was when I was in the band at Ole Miss. We played Air Force in the Liberty bowl in the early 90's. We won, but it was really cold. Despite the weather being much better this time, I don't think that will be my memory of this game.

Yesterday morning didn't start out very well for us. We left for the game four hours prior to kick off thinking we had plenty of time. After all, we were only six miles from the Cotton Bowl. Also, I had purchased a parking pass from Ole Miss. We didn't make kickoff. The traffic was horrible and we tried to park in three different Red parking lots but were told they were full. So we took a chance and paid a store owner $10 to park in his lot. Luckily the end of the game was much better than the start for us. And to top it all off, the rental car was still there when we returned from the game.

Tech fans were generally nice. They were not the worse fans I've ever encountered despite their reputation on the message boards. Of course I would hate for fans from other schools to obtain an impression of Ole Miss fans from some of our posters on the boards. Most were friendly and I had a good time chatting with them. A few of them made jesters and called us "losers" before the game but they were tame after.

The Cotton Bowl stadium was in great shape. I wouldn't mind going to another game there in the future. I could see how it might not be a pleasant place to visit if the weather was horrible . I don't blame the Cotton Bowl for moving to the new stadium.

I knew there would be quite a few Rebels there but I was shocked at just how many actually made the trip. Rebel fans flew in from all over. I met folks from Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Ohio and Colorado. During the game it was hard to tell how many Ole Miss fans were in the stadium because our colors are similar. Red, Red, Black, Navy However, after the Tech fans started to leave it was apparent just how many Rebels made the trip. I'm not good with numbers so I won't guess but the media cannot say we don't travel well.

This experience was a good one for me. Even if we hadn't won I would still have had a good time. I recommend all Rebel fans make a bowl trip in the future.

The University issued the following statement:

In response to the charges made against Ole Miss Head Basketball Coach Andy Kennedy in Cincinnati, Ohio, Thursday morning, Athletics Director Pete Boone and Coach Kennedy issued the following statements:

"Clearly, this is an unfortunate situation. However, after a full discussion with Andy Kennedy and his staff, who were with him, I have the utmost confidence that once all the facts are known, Coach Kennedy will be cleared of all charges," said Boone, who is with the team.

"I regret this situation," Kennedy said. "The focus should be on the players and the game, not on me. I vehemently deny the charges levied against me, and am completely confident that I will be fully exonerated of all charges."

Coach Kennedy will continue his coaching duties.

P aul Daugherty, Cincinnati reporter said when asked about the AK report:

Yep, actually talked to Someone Who Would Know just a few minutes ago. He said the cabbie dropped a racial slur on a member of Andy's party as they got into the cab... AK and his four companions, all his assistant coaches, got out of the cab and hailed another. As they were on their way back to their hotel, cops pulled them over and charged AK with assault.

My source said AK assaulted no one and has 4 eyewitnesses to swear to it.
Given what I know of Kennedy from having covered him as a head coach and as Huggins' top assistant, I believe this account.

Of course, I could never believe a guy like C. Blount could be charged with possessing 29 lbs. of marijuana, either.

We'll see.

As an Ole Miss fan, I know one of the biggest myths in college football is that Ole Miss doesnt travel well.

Ole Miss has sold over 20,000 tickets to the Cotton Bowl. 20, 000 officially through the University. Many other folks have bought their tickets elsewhere. Ole Miss will likely have 30K plus in Dallas.

As you have seen by now, Ole Miss has an opening page for the website selling Cotton Bowl tickets. I thought it would be interesting to see what the other SEC bowl teams had on their front pages.

Here is what I found:

Alabama- Nothing- Guess they are still upset over losing the SEC championship

Vandy:

South Carolina- Basketball pictures. I would think they would be excited about the Outback bowl.

Georgia- Nothing about their bowl game. Again, I think they are ho hum about the Capital One bowl.

I received a set of my Cotton Bowl tickets. I ordered two from Ole Miss and two from a ticket agency. Only two of us are going but I wanted to make sure I got tickets. So I may have tickets for sale!

Texas Tech Traditions

So I'm curious about Texas Tech traditions. We've played there several times over the past few years. But none have been this big. I have heard they have a very good band, one of the best in the Big XII.

I also found something called Bangin' Bertha, a bell. I am not sure if it is rang or if the just have a bell. I assume they ring it.

They also have part of the Blarney Stone. Those who kiss the stone at graduation will be able to speak pretty.

Their fight song seems to be written about the same time as ours. Apparently they like to use the word "Fight" a lot back the. (Fight Fight for your Ole Miss & Fight Raiders, Fight! Fight, Raiders, Fight!)

Their hand signal is Guns up. According to the TTU site "the sign is make by extending the index finger outward while extending the thumb upward and tucking in the middle, little and fourth fingers to form a gun." (or just see the picture)

Their Grove is called Raider Alley.

After a week of bowl speculation, in 24 hours we will finally know where we are headed. It's a win win for Ole Miss.

Will it be Dallas? ESPN thinks so.

Will it be Orlando? According to articles written this week, the Capital One bowl representatives will meet tomorrow at 3:00 to cast a final vote.

I've written my preference already on the blog. Either way, it's great to be back in this position!

I know which one I hope to go to... Orlando. So Capital One Bowl reps if you are reading this, put on ABBA's "Take a chance on me" and get our invitation in the mail! Not to slight you Cotton bowl. I would be thrilled to spend some time in Dallas watching the Rebels play. I just want to play a Big Ten team since I live in Ohio.

I believe we are getting serious consideration from Capital One. Here is why: If they had already decided on Georgia it would probably have already been announced. I believe that both Florida and Bama will go to a BCS game regardless of who wins. I also believe that Capital One believes that as well. If they were sold on Georgia they could release Ole Miss to the Cotton knowing that it wold be Georgia unless Bama or Florida somehow fall out of BCS consideration. They have not done that. I think that's a sign of how serious they are considering Ole Miss.

It was nice to see the Rebels play WVU in HD tonight. I was hoping for a victory. But, well you know the score.

Oh and I won an award. But.. not a good award. I was slammed for ranking the Rebels too high on the CBS blog sportsline polls. Yes I know I only voted at the beginning of the season and in the last poll. And yes, I am somewhat of a homer but I do believe that ranking the 3rd best team in the SEC (one that Bama wouldn't want to play again and the only team to beat FL this year) at #11 is not out of the question. What do you think?

Capital One or Cotton?

If you asked me this question at the beginning of the season, I would have said either. Now I am getting greedy. I say Capital One and Ohio State all the way. Playing Ohio State would be great publicity for Ole Miss. Ohio State has one of the largest alumni bases in the country. They have numerous alumni in key media positions.

Most folks assume that Capital One will still choose Georgia because Georgia is a bigger named school and will bring more fans to the game. Not so fast.... Ole Miss always travels well to bowl games. In 2003 Ole Miss brought between 20 and 20K fans to Dallas for the Cotton bowl. The Ole Miss fans are pumped up and will follow its team to Orlando. Georgia fans are bitter for not making a BCS game. This is a disappointment as they were preseason #1 in the country.

We are now on the verge of bowling for the first time in years. We have beaten Auburn and Arkansas. These are teams that usually give the Rebs difficult times. I posed a few questions to Josh of the Vandy Blog: Vanderbilt Sports Line.

(1) How far will Vandy go this year?

Vandy has a shot at winning seven games without beating Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, or Wake Forest. The trick is that we would have to win three SEC games on the road (Ole Miss, Miss. St., and Kentucky). If we can win those three games, and perhaps pull off an upset of one of those four teams, we could be looking at an 8-4 season, which would be a major accomplishment in the eyes of all Commodore fans.

(2) Being 3-0 is the excitement around Nashville at an all time high?

We’ve been 3-0 at the beginning of the season before, but this time there’s a different feel to it. Winning a huge game on national TV last two Thursdays ago really set a different tone for this Vanderbilt. The fans are filling the seats, the team is playing tough late and holding leads, and the players have more confidence than ever. It is a great time to be a Commodore football fan thus far.

(3) What do you see as being the critical matchup this weekend?

Vanderbilt’s front 4 against Houston Nutt’s running attack, specifically the “Wild Rebel.” Vanderbilt has held opponents to 98 yards in their first three games. That stat however, is very misleading as non of the teams we’ve faced so far really committed to running the football.

(4) Do Vany fans see Ole Miss as a major Rival?

I think so. Vanderbilt and Ole Miss are kindred spirits in that both teams have historically been overlooked and looked past by the rest of the SEC (save Mississippi State and perhaps Kentucky). There’s also a rivalry in that both schools think they have the best looking women in the SEC.

(5) What does Vandy need to do in order to win this weekend?

The running game will be key. If Vanderbilt can stop the run, it makes Ole Miss’ offense much more one dimensional. With a quarterback with Jevan Sneed that’s not necessarily the end of the world for Ole Miss, but it would certainly allow Vanderbilt to dictate the tempo and the pace of play. On the other side of the ball, if Vanderbilt can continue to run the ball successfully, it will open up our playbook and allow Chris Nickson to do some things through the air. Vanderbilt’s wide receiving corps has been decimated by injuries early this season. While there is hope that Andrew Diomande, a transfer from Clemson who has been slowed with a toe injury, might make his debut Saturday, the unit is still not 100%. If Vanderbilt can effectively run the ball, it will allow the receivers to get in the game, and hopefully put the Rebel defense back on its heels.

(6) What's your prediction?

True to form, this game will be close. I also think it could be an offensive slug fest. As always, who wins the battle of the turnovers will be key. Still, Vanderbilt homers that we are, we’ve got to go with the Commies. Vanderbilt 27 - Ole Miss 24.

More optimistic than I was before the season started, but it will take a win this weekend for me to come off of my 5-7 preseason prediction. I will say that I don't think there's a team on our schedule, other than Florida, that we can't beat.-vandystu

It seems we've become accustomed to losing the close games. Games we should not win according to the experts and pundits. We were seven points underdogs and lost by two. We should be happy right. I think most Rebel fans are pleased with our team this year. Most believe we will win more than we will lose. However, this weekend's game was very hard to swallow. Hard to swallow because we were winning most of the game. Hard because we had four turnovers. Hard because it was too familiar to games over the past three years. We have to win one of those sometime right?

It's time to move on. We have at least five more games we should win (Samford, Vandy, Louisiana Monroe, Arkansas and Miss. State) USC also looks winnable.

Riley Skinner. Two seasons ago Skinner was a redshirt freshman starting for the third time in his career. In that game he was 4-5 for 43 yards. Skinner is all grown up now, and I'd argue that he's the best quarterback in the ACC. Last week against Baylor he threw the ball 36 times for 27 completions, 220 yards, and three touchdowns. He's matured into a great leader, he makes smart decisions, has good awareness in the pocket, and is incredibly accurate. The offense you see on Saturday isn't going to look very much like the offense of two seasons ago.

(2) Tell us a bit about your stadium renovations and what that means to the WF fans.

Saturday's game will be the grand opening of Deacon Tower, the $47 million project to update the press box on the west side of the stadium. The new box not only has a huge media area, state of the art television broadcast booths, and coaches boxes, but also a new club level, suites, and chairbacks in the middle sections of the stadium. The difference between the old box and Deacon Tower is night and day.

What this all means is that the Wake Forest's football program is here to stay. The program has total support from the school, the A.D., and most importantly the fans. Wake may never be able to put 60,000+ people in a football stadium because it just isn't possible with the alumni base, but the school and the fans are clearly dedicated to making it the best experience it can possibly be, and everyone is very excited about the tower.

(3) Now that WF is the ACC's only ranked team in the latest AP poll, do you feel that WF has the best shot at winning the ACC?

I do. As much as I've tried to defend the ACC in the past, I think after last weekend I'm going to have to drop most of my arguments. Wake has clearly made itself the front runner now, and although I still worry about the trip to Tallahassee to play Florida State and Clemson's visit to Winston-Salem, at this point it really does seem like it's Wake conference to lose. It's still early, and I'm not ready to declare the Deacs the champions today, but things to seem to be coming together to make it a strong possibility.

(4) How will Hanna affect your game plan for Sat?

If it's pouring rain Saturday there will probably be an negative impact on Wake's offense. Based on what we've seen so far, it looks like the passing game is going to carry the Deacs this year, and obviously that's more difficult in the rain. Still, for all the talk about Riley Skinner and the passing game, the defense is really the strongest part of this team. I'd be surprised if they let anyone score too many points this season, and bad weather would work to their advantage. I think you'll see Wake stick to a very conservative offensive game plan to avoid turning the ball over, take the opportunities that present themselves to put points on the board, and rely on the defense to get the job done.

(5) You asked first so: Any predictions for Sat? How far can this Wake team go this year?

I know, I know. I've got to save my actual score prediction for Friday's preview, but for now, even if the weather is bad, I still think Wake wins by two touchdowns. If somehow the weather gives us a break, I think there could easily be a 17+ point margin.

As I said before, things are lining up well for Wake to win another ACC championship, and I feel like there's a pretty good possibility of seeing that happen. The way things stand right now, I'd be surprised if Wake wins less than 10 games this season.

Should be a great game, two fairly even teams. I think that Ole Miss will struggle to stop Wake Forest's offense with Greg Hardy and Peria Jerry out. The Rebels do have a lot of athletic ability, however, especially on offense.-JaredShelton

The Memphis game (regardless of the strength of the Tigers) got most Wake fans' attention, I think. There will be a contingent that looks at the dismantling of the Rebels two years ago and expects the same thing. My general feeling is that we're getting you guys at a great time with Hardy being out and Jerry perhaps being limited in his snaps. Y'all should be a team that improves throughout the season as you get Nutt's gameplan in place. I think that Wake's offense will have a lot of opportunities against Ole Miss' defense. McCluster scares me (as he did when he was a freshman? in '06, though y'all couldn't get him involved too much that game).-DeacInVermont

I don't think there's any doubt that it will be our toughest out-of-conference test. Ole Miss made a colossal mistake in making the change from Cutcliffe to Orgeron, but the one thing Orgeron could do was recruit, and Nutt stands to reap the benefits. It does somewhat go without saying when an SEC team (not named Vandy) comes to town, but this is a very talented squad with a lot of playmakers. Nutt also causes havoc for opponents in much the way Wake does for its opponents in that his offenses will do some things that teams don't see very often otherwise. As anyone who watched the LSU game last year can attest to, he does an outstanding job of utilizing the assets at his disposal. I'm hopeful that Wake's experience and overall completeness will be enough to see us through, but there is no doubt in my mind that it will be a very competitive game.-wsc8521s

(2) What are your strengths and weaknesses this year?

Strengths: the defense as a whole. This is the best defense that Wake Forest has had in quite some time, and they have very good team speed. The skill positions as a whole are also strength for Wake.Weaknesses: The offensive line is talented, but very inexperienced. They didn't run block well at Baylor, but they did do a good job in pass protection. They should be thanking their lucky stars that Ole Miss isn't at full strength along the DLine.-JaredShelton

Wake's biggest strengths are the back seven on defense and the ultimate game-manager at QB. This isn't to slight our D-Line because it's good, just that our linebackers and defensive backs tend to outshine. Weaknesses are an unproven receiving core and offensive line. As a fanbase, we liked what we saw out of the O-Line from a pass-protection standpoint, but the run blocking was a bit lacking.-DeacInVermont

I would say our weakness is the O-line, just because we are shuffling so many new guys in there. It takes a while to build cohesion and I think that showed with our run blocking and pass protection (at times) in our opener. If teams crowd the box against us early on we will struggle to run the ball. But this won't necessarily hurt us because of one of our strengths...Riley Skinner. He is exceptionally poised in terms of scanning the field, knowing who to go and knowing when to get rid of the ball. Our back seven also is a strong point, with Curry, Smith and Ghee all touted pro prospects and exceptional playmakers.-wsc8521s

Very, very good coach. Ever since he had Arkansas a fluke fumble away from beating #1 undefeated (and eventual national champion) Tennessee on the road in his first season on the job there in '98 I've had a lot of respect for him. He got terribly mistreated there with all the success he brought them...hell he was in the SEC Championship game (and winning in the 3rd quarter) against Florida all of two years ago. The Nutt hire was as good as the Orgeron hire was bad...and that's saying something.-wsc8521s

What will Hanna do?

The latest has Hanna right over Winston-Salem on Sat. The game is likely to go on as Hanna will be a tropical depression by the time it reaches North Carolina. It seems the biggest impact Hanna will have on the game will be how gameplans change because of the rain and the wind.

The rain *may* benefit the Rebels because of our strong running game. The Wild Rebel and the run by committee will be in full swing as the rain falls and the wind whips. Well, here's to hoping anyway.

It's eerily odd that the last time Ole Miss and Wake played it was nasty weather. Wake won easily that year by pounding the Rebels with their running game. Could this be Karma? Does Wake Forest need to check us off of their Karma list like Earl? Let's hope so.

Since when did Vandy become a Rival?

I recently bought the latest NCAA football game for my XBox360. I was shocked to see that EA sports has Vandy as one of our rivals. I've never thought of them as a Rival and I have never heard that mentioned before. Also, in the lead up to the game, it says that Vandy leads the series by double digits. (We lead 44-33-2) Oh yeah it also calls us the Bulldogs.

EA is supposed to be a reputable game company. Why all the mistakes?

It's slow around Rebeland but soon the Grove will be alive with the sound of tailgating. Once again we are on the verge of a new era at Ole Miss. It was only a few long years ago that we were similarly situated. All we can do at this point is hope that this time it will turn out better.

Bruce Feldman: Expect more Wins for Ole Miss

We are getting some praise from ESPN as Bruce Feldman writes what most Ole Miss fans already feel. Below is a bit from his mailbag column:

"From Brett in Chicago: I know you've been touting Notre Dame to win a lot more games because of its easier schedule as much as the team is getting older (which sounds a bit like a cop-out to me), but I won't give you a hard time for that. What other mediocre programs are you going to go on record and tout?

Bruce Feldman: I do expect ND to win at least eight games this year, and I also believe Pittsburgh and Ole Miss will make big jumps forward in the win column. The Panthers get a lot of their key players who were injured back, and they have matured along both lines. Ole Miss gets a huge boost from QB Jevan Snead, the Rebels have a terrific D-line, and their young receivers have kept improving. Vegas agrees with me about the Irish, as this Jeff Haney story explains."

The Magnolia Bowl

The Ole Miss and LSU rivalry now has a name and a trophy. The game will now be known as the Magnolia Bowl and a trophy with a golden magnolia will be awarded to the winning team. Student Bodies from both LSU and Ole Miss decided to name the rivalry and picked Magnolia Bowl as the name. Magnolia is the state flower for both Mississippi and Louisiana.

SEC's Top 10 games for 2008

With football just over a month away, I decided to take a look at the SEC schedule this year for the most exciting games. Here are my top 10 games.

(10) Auburn v. LSU- Should be the SEC West game of the year.

(9) Ole Miss v. MSU- AHHH revenge is sweet.

(8) Tennessee v. UCLA- Tennessee is making it's California rounds.

(7) Alabama v. Tennessee- Usually an exciting game.

(6) Arkansas v. Texas- Arkansas and Texas bring back the old SWC rivalry.

(5)Alabama v. Auburn- Will Saban stop the Tommy Curse?

(4)Georgia v. Arizona State- This will be a good SEC- Pac 10 matchup.

(3)Florida v. Georgia- This will be the game of the SEC East this year. I'm just glad that we only have to play one of them this year.

(2) Auburn v. West Virginia- One of the SEC's big boys plays THE Big East Big Boy.

(1) Ole Miss v. Arkansas- This will be billed as Houston Nutt's homecoming. Even if both teams haven't won a game this will be exciting.

In the Atlanta Journal Constitution today Mr. College Football, Tony Barnhart, had this to say about Snead in an article entitled SEC Quarterbacks: Five Burning Questions:

How good is Javan Snead? Two years ago Snead battled fellow freshman Colt McCoy for the starting quarterback job at Texas. McCoy won and Snead landed at Ole Miss, where he sat out last season. Snead completed 20 of 26 passes in the Ole Miss Spring game. He’ll team with former Ole Miss quarterback Kent Austin, who returns to Oxford as offensive coordinator after a successful coaching career in the CFL. If McCoy is the real deal, and the people in Oxford swear he is, Ole Miss (3-9 last season) could be the most improved team in the SEC in its first year under coach Houston Nutt."

Ole Miss fans say add more sports

Recently the Hotty Toddy Blog polled readers on what new sport they would like to bring to Ole Miss. With twenty-six percent of the vote, Swimming beat out Gymnastics and Hockey which received eighteen and sixteen percent. Seventeen percent of those polled believed that Ole Miss should compete in all three. Twelve percent wanted to add another unnamed sport and only five percent didn't want to add another sport. What do you think?

Feldman: SEC 3rd best QB conferece

Today is Feldman's blog he ranked the conferences based on QB. He ranked the SEC 3rd behind the Big 12 and the Big Ten. He did mention Jevan Snead, saying that expectations were high for him but he was still unproven.

I agree that the Big 12 should be ranked high but I don't understand how he can rate the Big Ten @2. He says "This is the opposite of the SEC and Big East -- conferences in which there is one big star and then a lot of unproven QBs in the mix." I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Ole Miss fans discuss the ACC

Ole Miss fans, in response to the ACC fans who shared their feelings about Ole Miss, answered a few questions about the ACC. Most Rebel fans feel that the ACC is a respectable football conference and the best basketball conference. It was also interesting to see how many Ole Miss fans disliked Miami. I wonder if other ACC fans feel the same way?

(1) What do you think of the ACC in general?

I think some of the ACC programs have a great tradition - Clemson, Virginia, Florida State, Georgia Tech, even BC. The past few seasons however, they have underperformed. I'm still waiting for the ACC to emerge as the all-powerful conference so many experts predicted five years ago. With that being said, I definitely look forward to watching some ACC football this fall and expect to see some great games.-Minnow123

As much as I hate Mississippi State, and don't believe they'll ever be SEC quality, I would honestly trade Vanderbilt for Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech has some really historic rivalries with 'Bummer & Allbarn, and it would really be great to have UGA and GA Tech playing for an SEC game. Vandy would fit more into the basketball stereotype of the ACC, and of course, Ga Tech would bring us more revenue in the SEC. I would also consider Clemson. That would be good to have South Carolina to play their in state rivalry game as an SEC game, but it's still so damn hard to view the Gamecocks as an SEC team...even with Spurrier. I'd swap Vandy for Ga Tech. Of course, I'd take FSU before GA Tech, but trading Vandy for FSU just isn't a fair trade. You go from great academics in the SEC to the worst in the ACC. I've always sensed Clemson would fit right in with the rest of the SEC because of geography, tradition, passion, etc. I like USC and their fans I have encountered. But they - along with Arkansas - are still new members of the SEC relative to the other teams. So, I guess the easiest switch would be USC for Clemson . But if I could just summarily choose one team that doesn't belong in the SEC, I'd say Vandy. While they are a charter member and help skew some of the academic stats for the conference as a whole, anyone who has attended a game in Nashville can tell you it's just not SEC football. I would say Clemson. My soon to be wife graduated from Clemson, and we catch a game or two a year there. Living in Atlanta, we have been able to hit several ACC games. Clemson has a very nice campus, great facilities, and a lot of great tradition when it comes to football. They have a fantastic balance between historic game day festivities, with a lot of current day influence. I can just never let myself yell out, "Go Tigers". Not only that, but it just doesn't seem that Tommy Bowden will ever get them over "the hump". We'll find out this season with Clemson being pre-season ranked in the top 10.-GeorgiaRebz

When I think of schools like Clemson, Florida, UGA, LSU, Auburn, GT, Ole Miss, etc., I think "college football". When I think of a team like Miami, I think "semi-pro football". If you're going to enjoy the fruits of victory and success, you should be willing to endure the pain and suffering of failure. Before they became a semi-pro team in the early 80's, the interest in that program was so abysmal it was on the verge of getting axed completely. Think about that for a minute. No matter how bad things may get in the W/L column, can you imagine there ever being even a .00001% possibility of your entire program being abolished because of lack of interest? Va Tech fans should be proud of their basketball support. That was one of the most exceptional game atmospheres I have ever witnessed, and it far exceeded what Ole Miss fans have provided their own basketball team at home. Even though we won the game(NIT), the fans could not have been any better. Ga Tech fans are about as lack luster as Vandy(which is why it's such a great trade). Watch out Winston-Salem! We're come'n to stomp some Demon Deacon a! Other ACC teams not mentioned, Boston College-Maryland-NC State-Virginia, are not worth mentioning.-GeorgiaRebz

A lot of comments seemed centered on the Rebel Flag and Colonel Reb and old negative southern stereotypes. I'm not going to say those things don't exist, but in the 15 years I've been in Oxford, things have changed dramatically. There are no longer Rebel flags at games and they are generally frowned upon in most circles. The Colonel Reb mascot is being phased out, much to the chagrin of many fans, and the University has worked hard to shake off the negative stereotypes while keeping the positives... hospitality, pretty girls, good food and, God willing, good football. Yes I would. The Duke fans are idiots or they were just being "mean" in their thoughts about Ole Miss. Another thing that drives me crazy is the whole race issue that is still associated with Ole Miss. We’re not all racists because we went to Ole Miss or because we’re from the south. My freshman year in college I went to a school on a lacrosse scholarship and about 95% of my team was either from Massachusetts or New York. I loved all the guys on my team, but they were the most racist bunch of folks I had ever met. I never met anyone at Ole Miss that was more of a racist that any one of those guys from the north. Just because we’re from the south doesn’t mean we hate anything that’s not white. That is just an absurd assumption. The large majority of the people I have met in Oxford, with the exception of the police (they just hate life and Ole Miss Students), have been the most considerate and outgoing people I have ever come across.-jacopass

Yes. I am from just outside of Washington DC and grew up here in VA. I went to Ole Miss on a visit and fell in love with the place immediately. However, most (99.9%) of people have never been to Mississippi and base all of their thoughts and opinions on hearsay and rumor, with no personal experience. It's like the running jokes on West Virginia here and inbreeding, marrying your sister, yada, yada, yada. The sad fact is many still see the state of Mississippi as if it were 1963 and not 2008. Yes, there are a lot of things that still need to be address, poverty being a main issue. However, I have seen a lot more racism here in the DC metro area than I did in MS. I strongly believe that a greater attempt has been made to correct the injustices of the past in MS than in many other, larger, more prosperous states, including those in the north. People must set aside their preconceived notions of Mississippi and actually take some time to research their facts, spend some time here and then make up their own INFORMED opinion. This almost never happens and people continue to speak from ignorance. In court, ignorance of the law is no defense or excuse. Nor should it be with respect to the south.-RebInLorton

Yes. We are stronger academically then people think. Don't look at our admissions standards and judge us(we don't set them, our state board does). Only 7 public schools in the nation have more Rhodes Scholars than us. Our honors college is ranked top 3 in the nation. And oh by the way, We are Hosting the 1st of 3 Presidential debates. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't just give some low tier academic institution such an important event. Come check out our school, we can hold our own. 74 percent of the students that applied to med school were accepted (the national average is 41 percent.) We don't care about academics? Our final two teams to weigh in on Ole Miss are Florida State and Wake Forest. Wake Forest fans showed a lot of interest as we have recenlty played them and will play them again this year. Up Next- What Rebel fans think about the ACC.

The first thing I think about is when the band & cheerleaders come into The Grove for the playing of "Dixie". It is the coolest event I have ever seen on gameday! The number of hot women there is actually no more than you would find at most of the schools on gameday in the South. The main reason people think there are more hot women there is due to the fact that they wear cocktail and evening dresses to the games and have their hair & makeup fixed up. Don't get me wrong, there are hot women there, but no more than at FSU, Georgia, Auburn, etc.-villaricanole

Yes, versus Arkansas. I have visited Oxford on gameday and had a great time. It was the game where the rebel flags were 'officially' banned in the stadium. Everyone complied and seemed ok with it. The fans were great. Atmosphere was good. Nothing negative at all to say about the weekend in Oxford.-kellylexy

Yes, I've been to two Bama games and one Auburn game there and I'll be going to this year's Auburn game. (Yes, I realize that it's strange to like both Bama and Auburn.)I found it odd that everyone was dressed up and noticed the sheer volume of people that were tailgating. There seems to be a surplus of rude, drunken frat kids there. Also, the Hoddy Toddy stuff was slightly annoying. Oh, and I couldn't help but notice how many drunk people there were hobbling up the stands over the course of the game. -AtomicNole

Yes, I have been to Oxford. The campus is second to none, as well are the athletic training facilities. The Grove was pretty neat ( especially the food ). As an African American male, there are many stereotypes about Mississippi and Ole Miss specifically that MAY be true in some cases. However, racism may rear it's ugly head anywhere. Mississippi, nor the University of Mississippi deserve some of the negative publicity they sometimes receive. I have been to many Ole Miss games and my experiences there are just as pleasant as my experiences at Jackson State or Alcorn State games. I love the people of Mississippi and the fans of Ole Miss. I think Ole Miss is going to come into this game with something to prove. They have a lot of question marks, but they also have some players with great potential. Jevan Snead and Enrique Davis are the biggest unknowns for me. Houston Nutt is a proven winner and was treated badly by the administration at Arkansas. I really hope you guys put the hammer down on them in the next few years. I think Wake will win the game, but I really like the fact that we are getting you guys early in the season. I think Ole Miss will start clicking once you get a few games under your belt and will cause a lot of teams in the SEC some headaches.-DeaconCBC

Yes, I came down for the Wake/Ole Miss game a couple of years ago. I liked your gameday atmosphere - the Grove is certainly a great place for the variety of tailgates, although honestly I'd say about 50% of the people are concerned with the game and the other 50% are just there to be seen. But the entrance of the players into the square in front of the Grove was really cool, as well as having the band and everything else there. While I had a good time, it wasn't the best gameday atmosphere I've ever seen - it paled in comparison to gameday in Lincoln, but I think that's because for me, it's better when all the fans are just all about the game.-mattwfu99

I'm an older college football fan whose first known rivalry as a kid was Army-Navy but I'd probably have to say LSU-Ole Miss was the next one I became aware of. Johnny Vaught was the Rebels coach then (late 50s-early 60s). One season, in particular, Billy Cannon beat Ole Miss with a punt return, 7-3 (or something like that) but Ole Miss stuffed them in a rematch in the Sugar Bowl, 21-0 that same season. Otherwise, the Terps haven't played too many SEC teams in the regular season over the years. A home & home with Ole Miss would probably be good competitive matchups and financially better than the ones we start with California this season. I wouldn't mind seeing it happen now with 4 ooc games but I doubt that it will. Cal, notwithstanding, we've been focussing on playing more Big East teams which makes sense for geographical reasons. Who knows what the future brings, though? Perhaps, some seasons we could play one BE team instead of 2, for an SEC team. Otherwise, it's doubtful that we'd schedule 3 BCS ooc games in a season. It's not the SEC but the ACC is tough enough. Realistically, our chances of meeting in a bowl are better, IMHO. Have a good season, Ole Miss!-Terpengr
